For the record, I’ve been enjoying the Sony “Like No Other” campaign. Balls, Paint, Bunnies, and so on … Best group of spots I’ve seen for a while.
This time, however, the hype certainly does not live up to the end result. I find this spot a complete let down. And the tie-in to “images” is rubbish. To say nothing of the fact that I have begun to expect colorful things from Sony, and the white foam is just that. Just plain white foam.
When I first saw it, I have to say I quite liked it.
But we watched a three minute clip from the 'making of...' during Lawrence's talk yesterday at Iris's wonderful Under the Influence conference.
And my two thoughts were this:
1. A 16ft high wall of foam just isn't that high. If it had gone up to the top of those buildings... now that would have been impressive.
2. At no point does the foam help you appreciate 'image'. When I first read a description of the ad, the writer explained how bubbles (and especially foam made up of LOTS of bubbles) are an excellent way to demonstrate 'image', because of the structures of the bubbles and the light refraction.
So I was expecting nice detail with lights, colour and pretty shapes. What I got was the impression that I was just watching loads of white blobs float around.
But that's an ad for 'White blobs. Like. No. Other.'
Not quite as impressive. # posted by Hayes Thompson : 3:18 PM, April 18, 2008
I found it quite relaxing — the music is chilled and the video footage is quite Sigur Rós-like but, overall, I have to agree with both you and with Hayes. It doesn't say "images" to me. It certainly doesn't inspire me to buy whichever Sony product it was (I've already forgotten!) # posted by owenblacker : 3:23 PM, April 18, 2008
Thanks for the comments.
FYI, the folks at Contagious seem to have a different POV (they really like it) ... I dunno, I just don't get it: http://tinyurl.com/3nnqky # posted by George Nimeh : 8:59 PM, April 20, 2008
